Just when Azle High boys cross country coach Don Ostermann fired the first gun to start the District 6-4A Cross Country Championships for the girls varsity race on the AHS campus, the skies opened up.
Steady rain became a deluge, filling the streets with water. But the races went on and, in a constant downpour in the second race, the Hornets earned a Region I meet berth by finishing third as a team.
Led by freshman Brian Collard and veteran Brice Wells, the Azle boys tallied 75 points to advance. As expected, Boswell and Birdville were 1-2. No Lady Hornets will race at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock Nov. 7. Azle’s best hope, Yolanda Garcia, needed to be in the top 10 and she finished 17th. Still, girls coach Melody Dennis said, the sophomore splashed to what was near her fastest time of the season, 13 minutes, 5 seconds over the 2-mile course.
