The 2009 football season certainly ended well for the Azle Hornets. After playing Boswell close and leading Saginaw at the half, AHS (3-7, 2-5) beat archrival Springtown then ended the season with a 30-10 thumping of Mineral Wells.
At Ram Stadium, the Hornets never trailed.
Jordan Beall, a certain First Team All-District selection, ran over from the Ram 2 to give Azle a 7-0 first quarter lead after Curtis Hamilton’s PAT kick. Beall finished the game with 126 yards and the season with 1,351. After a second period Ram field goal, sophomore Reese Richards scored the first of his three TDs on a 6-yard run. Hamilton’s boot capped the 14-3 halftime score.
After a scoreless third quarter, AHS QB Andrew Schroeder found Richards for a 13-yard TD and Hamilton kicked true again. Ahead 21-3 early in the fourth frame, Hamilton pushed AHS’ point tally to 24 with a 27-yard field goal. Afterward, a Mineral Wells TD late in the game was answered by Richard’s third score, on a 43-yard jaunt. Coach Eddie Paul said, “The kids finished strong. Our record was not what we hoped for, but the effort was there all season; it was tremendous – the kids kept playing hard.” The midseason push can be attributed to a time where “we could see what we could do offensively,” Paul said. The future? “We have a lot of good prospects; there’s some quality in the future,” Paul noted. |
