When Diane McCarthy realized how difficult it was for her elementary-school-age-daughter to read in front of a crowd, she encouraged Miranda to conquer that fear by participating in a speech tournament.
And apparently it worked.
Thursday, November 20, the Azle High School sophomore begins a four-week run as Claire in Casa Mañana’s production of Santa Claus is Coming to Town. “I am very excited.,” Miranda said. “This is my first lead role.” In the role of Claire, Miranda gets a to save Christmas from an evil toy maker who actually gets a judge to stop Santa’s Christmas flight.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town is the first of four plays in Casa Mañana’s annual Children’s Theatre program. Miranda said she auditioned along with at least 100 other young actors and was “surprised when they offered me the lead.” Leading up to it, she attended the Camp Casa program where she performed in Oklahoma at Bass Hall. She also took classes at Casa Mañana’s Performing Arts Conservatory, appearing in such productions as Oklahoma, Cinderella and Wizard of Oz. More recently she’s been part of their all-teen productions of Footloose and Once on this Island. And for the past two years Miranda has been studying under Azle High School drama teacher Tia Moen and private voice tutor Holly Davis – that’s right, she sings, too. She hopes to audition for the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts next year and says she would like to eventually “emulate Johnny Depp’s method of “becoming the person he is playing.” Santa Claus is Coming to Town runs from November 10 – December 23.
