The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches/Texas Preps Magazine weekly 4A poll now includes the Hornets. Azle (17-3, 4-0) blasted two more district foes and earned a berth on the statewide list at No. 25.
AHS just hammered two 6-4A rivals that ventured to the Hornet gym.
Aledo, still working in athletes from their state championship football team, came to Azle and Hornet coach Eddy Prather made sure AHS won since Aledo will certainly be stronger when the squads meet again. On Jan. 8, a 26-point third quarter buried the Bearcats; Azle won, 66-33. In that big period, Drew Charles hit a quartet of field goals; he finished with 15 points. That tally was second highest for the Hornets; Joe Richards’ 18 points was tops.
Jimmy Walter scored 13 points and Kellen Myers added seven. Azle did not hit a three-pointer against Aledo, but that changed big time in a 75-49 victory over Boswell Jan. 12. The Hornets rained in nine bombs with Myers hitting five for a team-high 17 points. Walter got a pair of threes in the first quarter as Azle raced out to an insurmountable 26-8 first quarter advantage. Against the Hornets’ “Band of Brothers” defense, the Pioneers did not even reach double digits until 3:04 was left in the second period. By then, Azle had already posted 36 points. Jared Darnell and Charles both scored eight points. Next Tuesday, archrival Springtown arrives for the Second Annual Hornets for the Cure cancer fundraiser. More wins means more notches to move up in 4A. |
